[Oct. 29th, 2009|01:42 pm] |
Yes. SF4 got a hold of me in June/July. That was when the first arcade cabs arrived in Metro Manila. It hasn't let go since.
Finally had another set of casuals today. Last month came with a pleasant surprise. Apparently, there are quite a few players in this area. As an aside, I recognized a few of them. They were the old MvC1, MvC2, and 3s players here. I guess ye olde 2D fighting games is really for ye olde crowd.
me: *chooses... Chun-Li as the main, as usual. I used Rose a lot as an alt though, as well as some Sakura, Cammy, Rufus, and my primary, alt Honda* new friend 01: Man, are you choosing nothing but women? new friend 02: Hey, I noticed that too. me: B-b-b-but! I choose E. Honda and Rufus too. new friends 02: Ah... tits. me:
I have come to the conclusion that Rose has a really freaking good Ultra, but really lacking in just about everything else. It's as if I'm still playing Sakura/Rose in the hopes that this game will magically turn into Alpha 3 or CvS2. (I'm sure I'll learn their advanced stuff in time. But still.) It's obvious that to get where I want to be, I need to log in more hours. Arcades and borrowing with friends is good, but it only gets one so far. I'm sure that even a few 1p playthroughs and trials will help immensely.
I really hope that 2010 means I a) have a current gen machine of my own and/or a good upgraded PC to run this baby, and b) the things that I learned in regular SF4 will still be valuable and viable by the time Super SF4 comes to town. |

Filipino Capcom and fighting game fans, please visit: the Philippine SF4 forums
Drop by and say hi. Support the scene! You might find new friends and players, both online and offline. :)
SF4 is pretty big. It's a game that we've waited forever for, and it's still relatively new. I'm glad to see there's interest in it. I myself don't have the console(s) for it yet, and I've yet to upgrade my PC's for it. But I support the arcades enthusiastically.
I admit, my Chun-Li and Honda need work, but I'm willing to give it a shot once I conceivably free up my sched in September, and especially if I get the console/PC ver of this game for practice. I think I'll never tire of saying it - the last time I've been this hyped and interested for a game was MvC2. This is great.

Hey, Neo! Steevan pulled through and found some awesome stuff. Just check the related vids and user account of this one. Also, high level Yurika at 4:30-5:00.
(Ok, you were right, lp lp does lead to the launcher super. It's bizarre graphically - it looks like it shouldn't combo, but it does.)
No wonder we couldn't find them. They're not filed under "Project Justice" at all. Either a) uploaders were using the Japanese name, "Moero Justice Gakuen" or b)they're all hoarded on nicovideo and only now do we see some cross uploads. Better late than never huh? |

I'm late a week. The times that I was on, I was at work and/or you were away. Happy birthday.
Your birthday log did make me sit down and think. Many of my old classmates have gone their separate ways. Many of them have their own families. A handful already have their own sons and daughters too! Crazy. My gang's mostly 20-25 year olds, but sometimes I do feel pretty old.
But then I've been thinking. Maybe it's really just a number after all. Sure, I work and do all the duties and responsibilities of someone my age, but otherwise I don't feel it at all. I guess what's important is that you feel good, and that's via a sound body and sound mind.
Hope you can enjoy the remainder of the year, man. It's been rough, but it's always nice to see you round. I've learned a lot from you and your crew, and I hope I can keep sharing things of interest.

Picked up KOF 2002 again, after a year or so of not playing it/playing 98 instead. I couldn't find my PS2 copy, so the arcade version will have to do. I just hope to be able to hang with the good players again (and the occasional Japanese or Korean arcade player at the Manila arcades.
It's much faster for one, and no bg characters to break throws. There's all those new-fangled (well, at the time) mechanics too, like a 2nd roll to bait C+D counters and of course the infamous Max Mode. At the highest levels, things can get quite autopilot when one has two or more stocks.
(Oh and getting this out of the way: lol Billy lol Team ABC lol cheap lol etc)
K9999 has good moves. But indeed, he's about as blatant a Tetsuo ripoff as you can get. I hope the replacement guy holds up just as well.
I guess in the long run, I really don't like it much as I do KOF '98. It does have Kula/K9999 though, so I guess it has that going for it. I'm hyped for KOF 2002 UM. It's weird that they had to go through three revisions (2002 console version, Neowave, and 2002 UM) to get things right, but hey. I've stuck with SF2 through the revisions and refines.
I love SNK so much (and maybe Capcom's the only company I love just as much if not more). I hope they can get their act together, news of delays, poor marketing and poor netcode do distress me. I hope you don't go through rough 2000-2002 times again.
P.S. I missed you, Netherlands stage.

[Jul. 2nd, 2009|10:40 am] |
Yes, apparently there were KOF 2001 tournaments. Knowing this makes my life is a little more complete. The arcade version is no doubt one of the lesser KOFs (most of the awfulness comes from the aesthetics and presentation side of things). But I'll be damned if I don't enjoy those long-winded Angel and May combos.
I wish I were Chinese enough to do them consistently, myself.

I don't put that much stock in the tiers list of this game (other than it's mostly Sagat/Ryu/Rufus-everyone else-Claw and Dan), but I enjoy reading them. To an extent, I also like to know and debate the hows and whys of rankings.

This film. This f'in film.
I don't mind some liberties here and there, but really. I sometimes wonder how hard it really is to patch together a video game movie. I understand you can't please everyone, but come on... this one's just inexcusable. You would have thought they'd have learned from the JCVD one, and the more embarrassing Street Fighter cartoons and comics.
I would have been perfectly happy with something cheesy and feel-good, a la the Dead or Alive movie. Or heck, they could have at least tried to be campy like the aforementioned Van Damme movie. If we strip the movie of its SF mythos, it would still be a half-baked, disjointed, overwired, and overnarrated affair. Leaving something as basic as subtitles for the Asian speaking parts is beyond me.
Kreuk can be cute, but she's no Chun-Li. She was particularly difficult to watch in some scenes. Angry baby face, indeed.
I suppose I'll write a proper review once if rested and don't feel like raging. There are a few good points, and some really unintentional laughs and gaffes (the movie took itself way too seriously). Anyway, only see this if you're an SF fan, have friends who are also SF fans, and want to laugh a spectacular car crash of a movie.
TLDR version How I felt before this 2nd viewing and How I felt afterwards
Seriously. The Nash in this film is a lock for next year's Razzies. He has to be. |

friend 1: "Man, Chun-Li still has those ridiculously huge legs. It's almost disproportionate. It's like where most of what she eats goes there." me: "Yeah man. Ever since 3s I think? Maybe even earlier. Drumsticks." friend 2: "Them childbearing hips. She looks like she had two kids already." friend 1: "Oh. Maybe that's why Fei Long is trying to abortion punch the females of the game." me: "Yeah, considering China's population problem and all..." all: (laughter)
So yeah, great weekend so far. Finally got to play SFIV and TVC. Former is really feel-good, and has a "it's been a long time coming" feeling to it. I love the hell out of SF2 ST, and I thought SFIV did a great job of combining old with the new. I love EX's and Ultras thus far. The other stuff (jumps, the overall feel, Focus Attacks and FADC) will take some getting used to. All in all two big thumbs up for this one. It was certainly worth the wait.
TVC... well. probably a little more getting used to. That's odd, considering I'm a blue-blooded MvC2 fan. Maybe it's just that the some of the graphics (especially the supers) and the abrupt, jarring changes in music will take a little getting used to.Love the new subsystems. Ken the Eagle and Casshern and pretty good. I'm not familiar with the other Tatsunoko characters, but I'll get to them eventually.
More stuff (game-related and otherwise) tomorrow. |

I'm still esctatic about the Cammy I got, and I did a double take.
Yes, the paint looks funny, but it's not as bad as the review (and the comment) describes it. Maybe I'm just not used to a dark skinned cammy. (You'd think that I am, given the wacky alternate colors in Mvc2, but no.) I don't know if what the comments about bootlegs is true. At any rate, what I have looks similar to what's on the box, and what's on Amazon. It looks pretty much the same as all the web pictures and descriptions, so I'm satisfied. It was a bargain (a "steal" so to speak) and a rare find, and for that I'm genuinely happy.
As shown on internet pics (and similar to the SOTA figurine), her braids come with their own little plastic bags. It's cute, as well as necessary.
Aside from the Cammys, and the Rei and Saber dolls I mentioned a while back, I've a few other things. I might as well list them. It's a simple and humble collection of what I found for characters I like. Not as good at the others, and thankfully not a "The 40 Year Old Virgin"-sized collection yet. I'm proud and happy to have found these.
*Aerith figure. I think I mentioned that one way back when I was starting this journal.
*chibi Chun, for the laughs. Bought from the same store where I got the Cammy one.
*Orihime keychain
*FFVII AC Tifa keychain
*FMA Armstrong keychain. Only dude I have in there... but that's okay, because he's awesome. I was sad that day, because a Riza one was nowhere to be found.
*Quistis figure. Not only is the skirt/leg area one plastic piece, her hair is stuck to her clothes. Boo! The whip was a pain to place, and her head was hard to clean when it got dusty.
Though I imagine it's not as hard to clean as this. Damn!
And that's one of the good things about conventions I guess. I found most of these at a reasonable price. The online prices seem more than a little ridiculous. |

| Happy Lunar New Year! |
[Jan. 26th, 2009|11:58 pm] |
Happy Lunar New Year!
As with Jan 1/the Gregorian New Year, today was a busy day for me. Lots of changes and movement. It's a little scary for some reason. But at the same time, it was a little exciting. Team at the office is doing great, and I'm striving for a lot of changes this year.
Speaking of which, I bought myself a little something to usher in the new year. Guess who is the proud new owner of what.

http://www.collectiondx.com/node/1082
I think I got a bargain. I checked Ebay and similar and holy cow. I only got it for a fraction of the advertised/suggested price.
As mentioned in the review, the paint job is funny and some parts seem to be really fragile, but I'm LOVIN' it so far. First time I could afford this on a whim, and I'm somewhat proud of it. She will go nicely on one of my shelves, or on my study desk.
I hope I don't go overboard with this. I do know that, figures-wise, I don't buy stuff just because, and stick to characters that I really like.
I also love this purchase because I did this in a reasonable amount of time. Sometimes, I'm too indecisive. I just had to get this to convince myself that I'd grab life by the ball this year, so to speak.
And yes, the irony. Could've gone with the cheaper Chun-Li ones on sale...
... ...
But to heck with that giant-legged tier abuser for now.

Happy 2009, folks!
I thought I'd be ready to discuss the many things that happened during my trip, but I'm not. If you're curious (and a really trusted friend), hit me up on AIM and YM and I'll see what I can share to you. My body is tired and my brain is still mush.
Other than that, there are really no words to describe what I'm feeling, so here's a Vice hcf+K:

And if that's not enough, here's one for the more hardcore of my LJ/Multiply friends: The We Are Gay for Bison Fan Club.

Last week I went to Ame Con with Joyce and a few other people from the club. We took my car and drove all the way from LB to Quezon City.
As it turned out, I found that the trip was more interesting than the one-day con itself. I had a few laughs with the ladies and somewhat caught up with the campus life that I missed while I was at work. We shared fun ideas, anecdotes, plans, and experiences while on the road. We had a good time, even though we had to accomplish a bunch of side trips before arriving at the venue itself.
Yeah, in retrospect was uneventful for the most part. (The rainy weather- oddly appropriate considering the "ame" name-- did not help either.) It seemed to me that the budget and preparations weren't as good as the earlier Ame Cons that I attended (2005 and 2006). It could also be that (I hope not) I'm growing too old for this. It's either that, or the new con-going populace has become younger. I did notice that some of the Ame organizers of old were no longer there. In all likelihood, they're just as old as me-- hence they've probably graduated, and have been swallowed by the working world, too. I guess I just can connect to those a few-to-several-years younger. I mean, look at this. Wow. It makes me feel old, lost, and makes my head hurt. On that note, if there's any young lions reading this, I do have a few things to say. Please, please keep the 4chan-isms and similar internet jokes to a minimum. I (we) know, already. It's kinda past its expiry date now, and it's getting grating and annoying. There are ways to be funny in-costume or simply in-convention without using meme* or a quick reference for a cheap pop, so to speak.
Oh well, I can't really hate on the event 100%, it was a chance to see the SOMA people again, and I did get some merch from the event (more on that later).
On that note, what the heck happened to Hero TV? They usually hold one of the biggest cons of the year (and usually the year-end one). Their sites and blogs are eerily silent, and the hype has been conspicuously absent this year.
=== *I just looked that up. Joke's on me! I didn't know it was an actual dictionary word and not some internet brainchild. |

Yeah, Jesus Christ, work is still hard. Doubly so now, and in the foreseeable future. The company is expanding and diversifying, so now we're now taking US calls along with the UK ones. Great care and smarts are needed so as not to confuse the two. (This is especially true with regards to spelling, and certain terms.)
As we are allowed (or what the firewall allows anyway)internet access, things are often weird. The guy next to me this past week has been...curious, to say the least. I won't pretend that it's something I haven't been through before. It's the first time I've encountered such at work, though. Let's just say he's a fan of some stuff that I'm also a fan of. This serves as a reminder of the quirks and things I don't quite fancy in my subscribed fandoms.
Yesterday Turns out that the safe-for-work part Deviant Art is a go on our internet. As such, the guy does some searches, and:
dude: Daaaaaaaaaamn Sasuke Uchiha looks gay in this one.
I wish could have added how he was miraculously able to dodge that fact these past five years. Or how his statement will be enshrined halls of the Department of Redundancy Department. Oh well.
Earlier On a whim I go to a Guilty Gear sprites page. Dude unfortunately has a look-see and of course asks me:
dude: Wow, those are cool sprites. Are they for MUGEN?
me: I don't know. They just look like sprite rips to me. X and #R have PC versions.
dude: Do you know what MUGEN is?
me: Yes. (what I really, really wanted to add: "And I am ashamed to know that fact. If it were up to me, I never want to speak with you for the remainder of the day, or even ever again."
=== Okay, it's more of Ripley's level weird than bad per se. Really, really, really bizarre. Creepy if it weren't annoying and somewhat of a whoosh.
(Heh. Creepy. Really appropriate for the day and the season, then.)
I suppose what I really want to say that it's going to be a very long time before I find another one like Chloebs or ix_ I can relate to in terms of interests.
On the bright side, the boss and top brass are really nice people and I do like what I'm doing at work. Regularization and more perks, here I come. |
